Raising Eyebrows Raise your Eyebrows
Raising Eyebrows Gary Barwin
Sonnet

a hummingbird just collided with my forehead
and I’m seeing limes circling like stars
my ears are filling with water
it’s a bath for microscopic oboists
whistling a really tiny Dixie

someone pass me a rhinestone
a prayerbook, my entire family with
the zest of an orange
it is time to begin celebrating
Grandma’s just got out of the wolf
I expect she’ll bake cookies soon as she’s washed
the inner wolf from her apron

in each of the cookies an intimation of death
a new shortcut through the woods
